Enlisting ISIS/Sumac vocalist Aaron Turner, this refreshed incarnation of Neurosis delivers a landmark album that feels almost defiantly out of step with the constant frills and dopamine rush of modern music. The raw aggression hits like a brick to the face from the opening howl of “WE ARE TORN WIDE OPEN” and rarely lets up. Standouts like “Mirror Deep,” “First Red Rays,” and “Seething and Scattered” balance sheer weight with an almost suffocating atmosphere. Thunderous drums, exquisitely plodding riffs, visceral vocals, and haunting atmospheric passages collide with moments of eerie calm, making the inevitable eruptions of heaviness hit even harder.
